SERIES #17 vs HOUSTON - Stouts Stink and Sink To New Low

The Stouts head home off the heels of losing two of three to the league leading San Francisco Quakers.  As a matter of fact, Baltimore has lost two of three in their last three series, having also dropped matchups to Boston and St. Louis.  Back home, they hope to get back on track against another struggling team, the Houston Buffaloes, who bring a league worst 18-30 record into town.  Let's get to the action.

Houston Buffaloes (19-30)0100200003100
Baltimore Stouts (21-28)000002000260
W: J. Mays (1-2)   L: J. Lieber (2-7)
SV: A. Rhodes (8)
HR: T. Helton (12, 6th inning off J. Mays 1 on, 2 out)

Former Stout Joe Mays took to the hill for the Buffaloes in this one.  Mays was traded earlier in the season without making a single appearance in a Baltimore uniform.  He had revenge on his mind though, and he came through in a big way, holding the Stouts to only four hits and two runs in his six innings of work.  His only mistake was a two-run homer to Todd Helton in his final inning.  The Houston bullpen tossed the final three innings without incident, Arthur Rhodes working the final two for his eighth save of the season.  Newly acquired Jon Lieber worked six in his Baltimore debut.  He pitched decently, but it wasn't enough as he was saddled with his seventh loss on the season.

Houston Buffaloes (20-30)1200002005101
Baltimore Stouts (21-29)000010001273
W: A. Ashby (2-7)   L: K. Rueter (3-3)
SV: R. Beck (2)
HR: B. Santiago (4, 2nd inning off K. Rueter 0 on, 1 out), R. Sanders (4, 7th inning off A. Osuna 1 on, 1 out)

Baltimore looked to even the series in game two, sending their best pitcher, Kirk Rueter, to the hill.  But the Buffaloes had another idea.  They plated one run in the first and two more in the second to take an early 3-0 advantage.  The Stouts were unable solve Houston pitcher Andy Ashby.  A single run in the 5th was all they could manage off the Buffaloes starter.  Ashby pitched into the 9th to record his second win of the season.  Rod Beck came in and despite allowing an inherited runner to score, recorded his second save.  The mighty Baltimore lineup has only managed 13 hits in the first two games of the series.  They have scored three runs or less in five of their last seven contests.  For comparison, the Stouts scored three runs or less in six of their first 33 games.

Game 3

Houston Buffaloes (21-30)00000030811110
Baltimore Stouts (21-30)000000010151
W: R. Arrojo (2-4)   L: A. Embree (1-4)
HR: S. Sheldon (2, 7th inning off A. Embree 2 on, 1 out), P. Konerko (1, 9th inning off F. Rodriguez 3 on, 2 out)

A pitchers duel in game three as Bryan Rekar and Rolando Arrojo each held the opposing team scoreless through six innings.  The game took an extreme turn when Baltimore was forced to go to their bullpen in the 7th inning after Rekar was injured while batting the inning prior.  Alan Embree promptly put two runners on base, then gave up a three-run blast to Scott Sheldon to give the Buffaloes all the runs they would need.  Felix Rodriguez was called upon to pitch the 9th, and after a two out error by Dave Magadan, the flood gates opened.  Houston eventually plated eight runs in the inning to win the game 11-1.  Arroyo was brilliant for the Buffaloes, coaxing another sub-par performance by the Baltimore bats, allowing only five hits in the game.

In addition to the loss of Rekar, who is expected to miss his next start, the Stouts also lost 2B Fernando Vina and RF Albert Belle.  Vina is headed to the 15-day disabled list.  Belle is expected to remain active, but will miss at least a week of action.

Baltimore is swept for the fourth time this season.  The combined run differential of the teams completing the sweeps (MIL, MIN, NYB, HOU) is -210.  They are collectively 40 games under .500.  The season has hit a new low.  The Stouts exit the debacle nine games below .500, their worst mark of the season.  Up next is a road date with the Oakland Osprey, losers of four in a row.
