Pick 15.14 - 340th Overall

Joe Mays - MIN SP

The second of my back-to-back picks, Joe Mays provides another arm for the rotation.  This was really not so much a pick for the upcoming 2000 season, but for 2001.  In our current season, Mays provides innings.  He had a pretty dismal year, going 7-15 with a 5.56 ERA in 26 starts.  At this point in the draft, I'm in need of guys who can provide starts for the rotation.  While Mays may be lackluster for the upcoming year, his 2001 season is spectacular.  A complete turn around, he picked up 17 wins for the Twins that year, posting a 3.16 ERA in 34 starts, earning an All-Star appearance along the way.  Mays actually led the league in ERA+ that year, posting a 143 mark.  ERA+ is a statistic which regulates regular ERA to the league average and is adjusted for the players home ballpark.  While Mays slips back into crappiness in 2002, and for the rest of his career for that matter, I'll happily throw him out there for our 2001 season.  He's my 5th starter in 2000, and I'll be looking for guys with short game started totals who can maybe fill in for some of his starts.
