Pick 19.14 - 436th Overall

Elmer Dessens - CIN SP/RP

Sticking to the theme of best available arm, Elmer Dessens works his way into the fold.  Not a sexy pick by any means, Dessens provides some spot starts and innings out of the bullpen for the upcoming season.  In 2000, he tossed 148 innings with a 4.28 ERA.  Considering the state of the back end of the Stouts rotation, those numbers will play quite nicely.  In 2001, Dessens comes back to start 34 games for the Cincinnati Reds, winning 10 and sporting a 4.48 ERA.  The next season is the best of his career as he starts 30 games with a 3.03 ERA.

Again, it's at the point of the draft where you pretty much have to go with best available player.  Still need backup catcher, a lefty out of the pen, backup 3B, maybe another arm for spot starts, and some PH for the bench.
