Charlie Hayes - MIL 3B/1B

We need a backup to Bill Mueller at 3B and the pickings are getting pretty slim. Rolling with Charlie Hayes in this spot. In 2000, Hayes was 35 and one year away from retirement. His best seasons are way in the rearview mirror. But we're not looking at him as a starter. We're looking for a veteran bench presence, and that's what Hayes will provide.
In 2000, Hayes batted .258 with an OBP of .348. That on-base mark is actually one of the better ones of his long career, and over 40 points above his career average. He also provides excellent corner defense. At this point in the draft, it was hard to do any better than Hayes for what we needed.
